One half is wolf- both wild and uncontrollable. The other half is dog- tame, and in need of love and support. The narrator is torn in exactly the same way. The alcoholism is very much a part of who he is, and when it has control of him, his actions are out of his command. The other part of him, the dog, misses the love and friendship of his marriage.
