Where Im Calling From Essay - 1599 Words
Where Im Calling From Sickness is a part of life, and sometimes a gateway to death. There are many different kinds of sickness- some that strike hard and fast, and others that are slow, painful, and consuming. Alcoholism is a sickness of the latter variety. It slowly takes over a victims life, ripping away loved ones while ravaging the victims body from head to toe- beginning with the mind. The healing process is all that can rescue one from sickness- it is the only way to stray from its path and avoid death. In Raymond Carvers, Where Im Calling From, the narrators attempted recovery from years of alcoholism is documented in detail. The story specifically focuses on the damage that alcoholism does toâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦He is often concerned that the symptoms that he is not experiencing will suddenly hit him. But, while the physical ailments pose immediate problems for him, they only constitute a very small part of the healing process. The larger task at hand is suppressing the menta l and physical need for alcohol, and facing the damaged state of his life that the disease has left him with. It is this task that scares him most. The narrator describes Frank Martin as somebody who knows the score (Carver 287). Frank Martin has seen men come and go, sometimes several times, and he knows exactly what the disease is capable of doing. He knows how it makes the men feel, and he knows the impact it has on their lives. Frank suggests a book, The Call of the Wild, written by another alcoholic (Jack London), to the narrator. He says it is about an animal that is half dog and half wolf...End of sermon (Carver 288). The animal in the book is very similar to the alcoholics, and that is probably why he suggested it. One half is wolf- both wild and uncontrollable. The other half is dog- tame, and in need of love and support. The narrator is torn in exactly the same way. The alcoholism is very much a part of who he is, and when it has control of him, his actions are out of his command. The other part of him, the dog, misses the love and friendship of his marriage. Legalize it - 2016 Words
In this paper I intend to show that the motives for the criminalization of marijuana was not for the public good, but were inspired by bigotry and fear, and potentially for political and monetary gains. This paper will also show that contemporary arguments for the continued criminalization of marijuana are based on skewed studies rather than factual information and that regulation, taxation and responsible use are the solutions to satisfying the demands of both sides of the issue. Finally, this paper will examine the constitutionality of marijuana criminalization and whether it should be decriminalized on this point alone. The use of marijuana (cannabis sativa) and its industrial component, hemp is not a modern phenomenon; in fact its useâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦One can draw parallels between the prohibition of alcohol and the criminalization of marijuana to see the logic behind this premise. Prohibition was championed by groups such as the Anti-Saloon League who felt that alcohol was a blight on society and spoke out against its ââ¬Ëevilââ¬â¢ effects. Prohibition was intended to curtail crime, yet crime increased in association with the manufacture, transport and sale of illegal alcohol and led to the birth of organized crime syndicates here in America. Prohibition did not thwart the publicââ¬â¢s use of alcohol; it only managed to drive its consumers underground. These scenarios are all similar to what we see today in connection with the criminalization of marijuana. Apart from the psychotropic aspects of marijuana, there is no dispute that it has industrial uses. Hemp was being used in the manufacturing of rope well into the 20th century. A point could be made that there were political and financial benefits to banning the cultivation of hemp in order to create a demand for nylon, a new synthetic material that was being developed by DuPont, a company owned by the affluent du Pont family. Currying favor with a family such as this obviously could reap certain rewards politically and monetarily and this fact could have been yet another motivation to criminalizeShow MoreRelatedLegalize It1104 Words à |à 5 PagesLegalize It In 2000, George Biersonââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Marijuana, the Deceptive Drugâ⬠, was published by the Massachusetts News. Darwins Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection free essay sample
The mechanisms for individuals in a population to survive heterogeneous habitats have been a strong debate within the scientific community. The native European Littorina obtusata are a great model organism to study Darwinââ¬â¢s Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection. This is because of their vast phenotypic characteristics, particularly their evolving shell thickness throughout history due to predatory pressures of the new arrival of Carcinus maenas. Here we test whether L obtusata three most critical tenants of Darwinââ¬â¢s theory of evolution by natural selection; variation within a population, heritability, and selection. By observing the shell thickness of East Coast of N. America L. obtusata where predatory C. maenas are common versus the West Coast of N. America where C. maenas are not found, it will further provide evidence whether these shell thickness differences are due to natural selection predatory or phenotypic plasticity occurring. This was tested by placing banded crabs in both East and West populations of L. These findings provide further evidence for Seeleyââ¬â¢s research that the accelerating morphological changes of L. obtusata shell thickness was in response to strong selection by C. maenas and not because speciation occurring. Some believe that Darwinââ¬â¢s theory of evolution by natural selection is operating the morphological breaks found in fossil records within a population. Darwinââ¬â¢s book On the Origin of Species listed four basic postulates to natural selection; there must be variations among individuals in a population, variations must be heritable, survival and reproduction must be variable and non-random (Darwin, 1859). As a result, every generation there will be slight changes in the population. One scientist in particular, Robin Seeley, tried understanding Darwinââ¬â¢s theory of Natural Selection by studying the thickness of shells of flat periwinkles, Littorina obtusata, of Appledore Island and the new arrival of predatory green crabs, Carcinus maenas. Seeley noted acceleration in natural selection that normally is not observed within the L. obtusata population in response to strong selection by C. maenas. This is because shell thickness affects the survivability and reproduction of L. obtusata when C. maenas claws break them to meal (Trussel, 1996). The observation confirmed that when C. maenas were introduced in the East Coast of N. America, L. obtusata range of shell thickness increased compared to the West Coast of N. America L. obtusata populations where predatory C. maenas were not found (Seeley, 1986). These vast morphological differences in their shell thicknesses was thought to occur because of the C. maenas selection for the thinner-shelled L. obtusata. Seeleyââ¬â¢s research further showed that speciation was not occurring within the intertidal snails as many previous scientists claimed.

Role of Financial Markets in a Modern Economy Essay Example
Role of Financial Markets in a Modern Economy Paper Discuss the role of financial markets in a modern market economy. Explain the role and function of the share market and its effect on the economy. The financial market is the most influential sector in a modern market economy. The financial markets provide products to consumers and financial intermediaries allow for the mobilization of money between savers and borrowers. The share market is the financial market in which investors buy and sells shares. The share marketââ¬â¢s main function in the economy is to allow consumers to attain part-ownership of a company and further their wealth and in effect provide funds for businesses for expansion. The main effects the share market has on the economy is its ability to reallocate resources and mirror overall economic growth. The financial services industry is one of the largest industries in Australia and its actions influence all other sectors due to its vital role in the economy. Financial markets are so significant as they create products for consumers also serve to provide a return for the producers. In essence, this allows for those who have excess funds to make these funds available to those who need additional money. Furthermore, the most influential institution in the financial sector are financial intermediaries who are those organizations that allow for the mobilization of money. These firms create a bridge between borrowers and savers in that they receive accumulated funds from individuals or firms and then allow for other firms and individuals to borrow and make use of that money. Financial markets are also the factor markets for capital in the market economy because capital must be acquired by businesses to produce goods and services. Financial markets provide an efficient process by which income that is not used for consumption can still contribute to aggregate demand. Savings from consumers, businesses and governments can be used for future consumption but also capital investment, which consequently increases the productive capacity of the economy. The share market is the financial market in which investors buy and sells shares, which are financial assets that give a person part-ownership of a company. The share market plays an important role in the Australian economy because businesses can sell shares in their companies to raise funds needed for growth and to provide individuals with dividends, which contributes to their disposable income. The role and functioning of the share market in the larger modern market can be seen from the perspective of the shareholders and the companies. For investors, the share market provides the opportunity for consumers to become part-owners of a business and thus are entitled to returns due to the risk they assume by investing in the business, these profits are known as dividends. As the company grows the value of the company increases and thus its share price will consequently increase. In such a situation, shareholders may decide to sell their shares to make a profit which is known as capital gains as they are selling assets at a price above the level originally paid for. However, the risks of being a shareholder are high as the company may lose money and thus dividends are reduced and the investor will not be able to make capital gains. There is an extremely high level of share ownership by the Australian public which increases the share markets role in the market economy. Currently, many people rely on the profits made from shares as their income and more significantly for their retirement. On the other hand, for a company the share market provides the opportunity for the business to increase its funds to keep as retained profit or allow for the expansion of the business. When a company first lists its business on the ASX it is called a float. Once the company has been listed it can access further equity funds at any time by issuing an approved prospectus for the release of new shares. However, issuing new shares reduces the control existing shareholders have over the company as they own a smaller proportion. The sale of new share is a primary financial market transaction whilst an existing shareholder selling their shares is a secondary financial market transaction. By allowing both types of share trades the ASX is in effect both a primary and secondary financial market. Changes in the share market have large impact on the operations of a company. A companyââ¬â¢s share price is determined by the price mechanism and thus if demand is low the companyââ¬â¢s value will decrease however if demand is high, the companyââ¬â¢s value will increase and thus provide benefits to the company itself and its shareholders. When individual businesses prosper it provides greater ability for the Australian economy to grow as it is heavily reliant on the growth of individual businesses to facilitate overall economic growth. The share market has extensive effects on the economy and it is an indicator of a countryââ¬â¢s economic conditions. Rising share prices suggest that the economy is experiencing favourable economic conditions as market prices rise in accordance to better economic prospects for companies. The relationship between general economic conditions and share values can be seen in the following graph which shows that fluctuations in the share market mirror changes in economic growth A downturn or upturn in the share market can be measured in the All Ordinaries Index, which measures the overall value of companies listed on the ASX. By comparing the AOI with changes in the economyââ¬â¢s growth rate we see that the share market generally rises and falls similarly to economic growth. However, the share market is much less stable and thus small changes in economic growth consequent in much larger changes in share values. The share market also affects the market through its ability to reallocate resources to different sectors in the economy. Those companies and sectors with the best growth prospects will be able to acquire additional funds most effectively and thus will raise the most funds when floated. In such a way share prices will be higher for firms in industries that shareholders expect will experience growth and thus the share market will raise the medium-term growth prospects of an economy. However, the main issue with using the share market as a guide to the state of the economy is that not all share purchases are based on a rational belief by the shareholder that the industryââ¬â¢s future prospects are solid. Many purchases are speculative, which means that shares are bought with intention of being resold within a short period. These investors are not buying with the intention of long-term capital gain, rather, short-term. The major problem with this sort of investment is that speculators base their investment on the ââ¬Ëhypeââ¬â¢ of the market, rather than the real profitability of the firm. This has the potential to see share prices that are overvalued, drawing further investment and leading to the misallocation of resources.
